We Got Comfortable

Europe is one of the best places on earth to live. Safe streets. Good healthcare. Long holidays. Beautiful cities. Our grandparents built all of this.

And somewhere along the way, we stopped building.

Comfort became the goal instead of the reward. We protect what we have instead of creating what's next. We ask for permission before we try. We form a committee before we build a prototype. We wait for someone else to go first: the government, a big corporation, America.

We forgot the simplest truth of all: you can just do things.

You can build a rocket. You can start a factory. You can write the code, weld the frame, call the investor, ship the product. Nobody needs to approve your ambition.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Comfort breeds caution. Caution breeds fear.

For decades, our culture has taught us that the future is something to survive, not something to build. Nuclear energy became a disaster instead of a promise. AI became a threat instead of a tool. Chernobyl, 1984, The Terminator, Black Mirror, climate doomism: every story ends the same way.

These stories aren't wrong about the risks. They're wrong about us. They forget that every hard problem in history was solved by someone who decided to build anyway.

Europe Has Done This Before

We invented the modern world. The printing press. The steam engine. The automobile. Today, ASML builds the most complex machines on the planet, and nobody else can.

We still have the best universities. Brilliant minds. Unmatched craftsmanship.

We don't lack talent. We lack urgency. We have the ability, we've just gotten out of the habit of using it.

We build apps when we could be building rockets. We debate problems when we could be solving them.

Innovation Creates Prosperity and Security

History is clear: nations rise with their technological frontier.

In the 19th century, life expectancy in Europe's industrial towns was barely 37 years. Innovation pulled us out of that. Industry created the comfort we enjoy today.

Comfort Is Not Permanent

Prosperity isn't something you have. It's something every generation has to earn again.

Right now, manufacturing is moving to Asia and America. Industries we once led are slipping away. Not because we can't compete, but because we stopped trying.

That's not a reason to despair. It's a wake up call. Everything we lost, we can build again. And better.
